This is a white hot image of an M2 Bradley (on the right) and an M113 APC just before they were fired on by an AH-64A during the Gulf War. The range is around 5 or 6 kilometers on a clear night. Many problems can spring up during combat that can lead to fratricide, among them are the following: Lack of positive identification of the target (almost impossible in this case), failure of ground troops to either stay within defined zones or contact their command to explicitly state their locations, and the failure of the aircrew to ensure they know of not only the location of their target, but also their own location, as well as what friendly units are at what locations.
