This is a black hot FLIR image of the M2 Bradley (on the right) and the M113 APC involved in a fratricide with an AH-64A during the Gulf War. This shot is just a few seconds prior to the launch of the first Hellfire. The range to target has been covered up, but I believe the range was between 5 and 6 kilometers. It is clear from this picture that it is almost impossible to identify these targets as friend or foe based on their looks alone. At times like this it is imperative that friendly aircrews know the locations of ALL friendly ground forces.
