The SA-15 SAM system is designed to engage air targets at low to medium altitudes. The system is completely autonomous in that it contains it's own detection and tracking radar. The SA-15 is normally employed on it own, although it can be linked to other systems. Although the second-smallest radar homing missile (the smallest being the SA-19 of the 2S6 system), it is still almost guaranteed to kill a helicopter if a hit is achieved. Coupled with its ability to engage targets day or night in any weather, and it becomes obvious that this is a very potent threat.
